The Haven Sermon Review

The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:17

Banning UMC, I have found you to be a spirit-filled congregation. You have a robust prayer life together. So, I thought for today, I would ask if you would share some thoughts that center around our reading:

John 12:23 Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

There are times in our lives that we do see God glorified. And, I would like us to talk together about those times when we can see God.

The ushers will come forward with the microphones in order that we can hear your stories.

So, here are my questions for you:

  1. Through what experiences have you had “God sightings?” when you felt you were fully in the presence of God?

  2. What person(s) in your life have you felt was most Christ-like?

I’ll end with a lovely poem about touching the face of God, that I know you will be familiar with. It’s written by John Gillespie Magee, entitled “High Flight.”

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark nor ever eagle flew— And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
